Over those rainy weeks (months, rather) I managed to clear the treelawn of weeds, and plant the plum tree and a formal pattern of boxwoods. To soften that formality, Janna planted the spaces between with blocks of flowers: marigolds, dianthus, begonias, vincas, and some sort of pink-leafed thing. The result is so much better than the sloppy mess we had before.

This fall, we’ll dig in some tulip bulbs, and next spring, we might switch to perennials to keep our plant cost down over time.
